Dr Laura Schmidt is Principal Scientist in the Urologic Oncology Branch of the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health in the United States, in the laboratory of Dr W. Marston Linehan. The Urologic Oncology Branch performs clinical trials evaluating and treating patients affected with Birt-Hogg-Dubé as well as basic research. Dr Schmidt’s research focuses on studying the genetics of familial renal cancers. Dr Schmidt is one of the pioneers in this field, being part of the teams that cloned the VHL tumour suppressor gene, identified the gene for hereditary papillary renal carcinoma type 1, and identified mutations in Folliculin, the gene mutated in BHD syndrome.
