Why do people with BHD get kidney cancer?

BHD causes lung cysts, skin bumps and kidney cancer.  A research team in Japan are interested in kidney cancer.

BHD is caused by a mutation in the FLCN gene. We are funding a project that aims to explain how FLCN deficiency leads to Kidney Cancer. FLCN deficient cells are known to have changes in gene expression, enzyme activity and cellular metabolism. In other words, it changes how cells work. Despite these important findings, key molecules to target for BHD kidney cancer therapy have not been found.

Professor Masaya Baba

“This research will provide the basis for the development of more effective BHD kidney cancer-specific therapeutics with fewer side effects.”

In this research project, the team will find molecules and signalling pathways that are essential for FLCN-deficient cells to survive and form tumours. To achieve this goal, they will search for genes that are necessary for tumour formation. This research will provide the basis for the development of more effective BHD kidney cancer-specific therapeutics with fewer side effects.
