Clinical Research:
Sauter and Butnor retrospectively reviewed the histopathological features lung resections taken from 72 patients with spontaneous primary pneumothorax at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Vermont between 1st January 2002 and 31st December 2012. Six cases (8.3%) yielded clinically significant findings, including one case of Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome. The authors suggest that routine screening of lung resections taken during surgery for pneumothorax should be performed, due to the high rate of clinically significant findings.
Case studies:
Seo et al. describe the cases of two unrelated Korean patients presenting with multiple lung cysts in both lungs. One patient was a 39 year old woman with a medical history of facial papules and pneumothorax, and a family history of skin lesions and renal cell carcinoma. The second patient was a 56 year old man, with no other symptoms. Genetic testing confirmed a diagnosis of Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome in both patients.
