Lung cysts in RCC patients could be an indicator of BHD

A new paper from Johannesma et al., (2015) has assessed whether the presence of pulmonary cysts in a small cohort of RCC patients can be indicative of BHD. Of the 182 RCC patients seen between 2003-2013, 11 had at least one pulmonary cyst below the level of the carina on CT imaging (1-5 cysts). None of the eight patients who agreed to a genetic testing was found to carry a detectable FLCN mutation. Johannesma et al. argue that such screening could be beneficial with further testing for BHD in patients with a greater number of lung cysts and a positive family history of pneumothorax or RCC.
